It is without question that dental health is an important part of a person’s overall health. Unfortunately, millions of people go without professional dental care each year, due to financial circumstances, lack of access, or both.
Dr. Alla Brown of Lanier Family & Cosmetic Dentistry in Buford, Georgia takes time away from her busy practice to serve those individuals who so desperately need professional care.
This year, Dr. Brown volunteered at the Georgia Mission of Mercy event which was held August 12 – 13, 2011 at the First Baptist Church of Woodstock in Woodstock, GA.
According to the report released by the Georgia Dental Associate Foundation for Oral Health, over free treatment was provided to over 2,000 adult patients over the two day event.
Over 1,500 dentists and hygienists participated to provide a total of $1.7 million dollars in free dental services.
Volunteering is an important facet of Dr. Brown’s career. She spent time during her graduate schooling serving on a mission trip in Ecuador, providing dental care to patients in remote areas of the country.
Her high level of skill and advanced training makes her capable of treating patients who have complex needs. Many of the patients at the Georgian Mission of Mercy event had neglected their teeth for several years or more. Some were missing teeth or had extensive decay and wear.
Providing dental care to those who can not otherwise afford it is rewarding in many ways. Not only do these patients leave with a healthier mouth, but in many cases they have restored confidence and improved quality of life.
