Fluoride is Your Friend, Not Your Foe!

With many erroneous articles floating around on the Internet regarding Fluoride, Buford, GA dentist Dr. Alla Brown would like to provide her patients with truthful information.

Fluoride is a mineral that helps to fight tooth decay. It is found in cavity-fighting toothpastes, mouth washes, and naturally in drinking water. Recently, there has been media buzz about the dangers of Fluoride; while it is true that too much fluoride exposure in young children can lead to staining and pitting of the teeth (also known as Fluorosis), this is not a cause for concern with the amount of Fluoride present in drinking water or toothpastes. Commonly visited websites that are not medically-supported use scare tactics to make you believe that Fluoride is unsafe. This is not the case.

In stark contrast, Fluoride is essential for preventing cavities, especially in the early stages of tooth development. It accomplishes its role as a natural cavity fighter by strengthening tooth enamel and making it more resistant to cavity-causing acid.

The American Dental Association recommends that children and adults brush twice daily with Fluoride toothpaste displaying the ADA seal of acceptance. Arm and Hammer, Colgate, Crest, and Aquafresh are examples of ADA-approved toothpaste brands. For young children, caregivers should begin brushing their children’s teeth as soon as they erupt in the mouth with no more than a smear of toothpaste. For older children, the ADA recommends that parents supervise brushing to ensure that they are using no more than a pea-sized amount and avoiding swallowing any toothpaste.

These ADA recommendations are put forth to ensure that children and adults are using Fluoride toothpastes appropriately in order to best defend against cavities. If you have any questions regarding Fluoride, please feel free to ask Dr. Brown on your next visit!
